Sustainable & Green Living Everyday

August/September 2010

Conserve, Reuse and Recycle!

For those of us in the East, this has been one warm summer!  We have hit the record mark more than once and the drought meter is ticking.

With our water levels below average for the season, lets hope for a wet fall to add to our diminished supplies.

Conserving water is a MUST for now.  Please heed the direction of your town or city if there is a water restriction in place.  Some towns require watering only on even/odd days, or on certain days of the week.

Rain barrels can be an added benefit to your home during these times.  They collect rain water, which you can then use to water your ever thirsty plants.  Whether you live in the city or the burbs, a rain barrel will help with water conservation, and your water bills!

On a landscaping note, although mulch looks good and warms any landscape, plants don't really like it much.  It can actually keep moisture OUT of the soil, as opposed to retaining it.  For a natural landcape brightner, try "stirring" the mulch around your plants.  Not only is this a money saving way of freshening your lanscape, your plants will thank you for the fresh air and moisture that can now seep into their roots.

Other green living tips......
  • Want to smell the freshness of spring everyday?  Hang your clothing to dry on a clothes line!  Remember that airy smell that you used to smell as a child? Clothes lines are making a big comeback these days.  If you can't hang your clothes out back, try installing a clothing line in your basement.
  • Use earth friendly, natural ingredient cleaners in your home.  Vinegar and lemons are great cleaning agents.
  • Open up your windows to let some fresh air in!  On cool days, reap the benefits of clean air circulation, and if you have flowers around the outside of your home, you will be able to smell their blooms all day.
  • If you can, bring a plant to work to purify the air in your office environment.
  • Find ways to recycle things, such as cutting a plastic milk carton in half and using the bottom half as a watering can.
  • Try using an old soft cotton t-shirt to dust with instead of using disposable dusters.
And remember, recycle, recycle, recycle!
